Portsmouth Ceremony Held to Remember Victims of 9/11 Attacks

20th Anniversary Held at Fire Station 4

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WJAR) — A ceremony was held Saturday morning at Portsmouth Fire Station 4 to remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago.

The Portsmouth Fire Department invited the community to the event. The ceremony began with the raising of the American flag and the playing of the national anthem.

The ceremony also included a wreath-laying ceremony, a moment of silence, and a reading of the names of the victims of the attacks.

First Responders Honored

Portsmouth Fire Chief Michael O'Brien spoke at the ceremony and honored the first responders who lost their lives in the attacks.

"We remember the brave men and women who selflessly gave their lives to save others," O'Brien said. "We also remember the innocent victims who were lost that day."

O'Brien also said that it is important to never forget the events of 9/11.

"We must always remember the lessons that we learned from that day and continue to work together to protect our country and our communities," O'Brien said.

9/11: A Day to Reflect

In addition to the ceremony at Fire Station 4, other events were held throughout Rhode Island on Saturday to remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Governor Dan McKee ordered that all state flags be flown at half-staff on Saturday in honor of the victims of the attacks.

McKee also released a statement in which he said that 9/11 is a day to reflect on the lives that were lost and the sacrifices that were made.

"We must never forget the innocent lives that were lost on 9/11," McKee said. "We must also remember the brave men and women who have served our country in the years since."
